Did Jesus Love Judas?

Did Jesus Love Judas?

Did Jesus love Judas?  Can one ever know?
My heart wants to say “It could never be so.”
But “love one another” says he, “as I have loved you.”
Could this commandment ever be kept true?

A towel he did tie around his waist
and washed Judas’ feet without any haste.
Did Jesus love Judas?  Can one ever know?
My heart wants to say “It could never be so.”

A morsel of bread, dipped he—a symbol of love—
of his self-offering: a gift from above,
and gave to Judas who would later say:
“The one I kiss is he, take him away!”

Judas departed in haste, the disciples thought to applaud,
but they did not realize he was purchasing the Lamb of God.
Perhaps they thought he would give to the poor.
But that night he betrayed the world’s Savior.

Did Jesus love Judas?  Can one ever know?
My heart wants to say, “It could never be so.”
But I am like Judas in a very great way.
For I betray my Savior day after day.

I deny him when my cross is too heavy to bear.
I realize in Judas’ betrayal, I have a share.
Does Jesus love me?  Can I ever know?
My heart wants to say “It could never be so.”

But with a towel around his waist he washes my feet of sin
and he counts me his own, by the Holy Baptism.
He offers himself to me in the Eucharistic Feast.
He is both the Victim and the High Priest.

Love so reckless!  Love of pain!
To love yet another one who betrays again.
Jesus loved Judas and me, I now know.
But my heart will ever wonder “How could it be so?”
